AIUインターン日記～Daily of internship students from Akita International University～「カリーナ、秋田の立派な農家として働きました！ Experiencing the farmer’s life with Warabi-za」
先週は、わらび座でいろいろなイベントに参加することができ、嬉しかったです。
27日は、わらび座のミュージカル「ジパング青春記が男鹿市に開催され、手伝いに男鹿に出発しました。朝９時にあきた芸術村を出発し、10時半頃男鹿市に到着しました。途中に、秋田の綺麗な景色が見え、楽しい旅行でした。
男鹿市での劇場に到着し、わらび座スタッフの会議に顔を出しました。公演が始まる前に時間があったので、男鹿海鮮市場に行ってきました。やっぱり、男鹿市は海に囲まれていて、海鮮は男鹿の特徴であります。海鮮市場に観光し、劇場に戻って来ました。公演が始まる前に、お客さんの手消毒のサポートをしていました。
Last week was quite overwhelming as I had a chance to participate in a few interesting events. First of all, I was happy that I had a chance to travel to the Oga peninsula, a small town in Akita located on the Japan sea shore.
Me and a few other Warabi-za employees left Semboku city at 9 am and by 10.30 we had arrived in Oga. During our small road trip, we were able to enjoy Akita’s views, which is specially beautiful this time of the year. Although the red leaves season is only about to start, it is already very pretty here.
After arriving in Oga, I participated in the meeting for the Warabi-za staff where we discussed our plans and schedule for the performance in Oga. My role was to help to sanitise the hands of the visitors. Having roughly an hour on my hands before the “Zipang” performance starts, I headed out to the local fish market. As Oga os located right on the sea shore, the town is famous for the seafood delicacies including sea urchins, caviar, scallops and so on. The fish market serves kaisendon, a bowl of rice served with fresh seafood on top and miso soup on the side. Unfortunately, the queue for the kaisendon was too long and I did not have a chance to order it. Yet, I still enjoyed the fish market.
公演が終わり、片付けを終わらせてから、わらび座のスタッフと一緒に海を見に行きました。カザフスタンには海がありません。内陸国出身の私は、海を見たら、胸が興奮に満ちます。子供の頃から、「海の近くに住みたい」という夢を抱き、海に来たら、嬉しいです。
After “Zipang” finished, I helped to clean up the theater. That was still relatively early by the time when we finished cleaning up, therefore, me and the Warabi-za staff headed out to see the sea shore. Having grown up in Kazakhstan, a land-locked country, I was not able to visit the sea back home. Thus any time I get to set the sea I am feeling very excited.
そして、何よりも先週、私の中で一番印象に残ったのは、月曜日・火曜日の農家体験でした。
わらび座とは、やっぱり、芸術だけではないのだとよくわかりました。以前、農家体験に参加することがなく、めちゃくちゃ面白かったです。この2日間には、稲刈り、稲かけなどの伝統的な田舎の作業を教えてもらいました。稲刈り、稲かけをやり、農家生活を体験し、2日間があっという間に終わってしまいました。
残念ながら、今年の状況では、多くの修学旅行や農家体験は中止になりました。また、秋田に来たくても来れない人もたくさんいます。この理由で、わらび座はオンラインの形で修学旅行を行います。私はこの中でオンラインで農家体験をしてもらうための動画を撮影するカメラマンの役割もやっていました。
On the next day, I found myself on the rice fields with the local farmers. The reason why I participated in the rice harvesting is because I had a photographer role. Every year, Warabi-za holds farming trips for the middle schoolers from various parts of Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu. On the farming trips that last for a few days, children learn rice harvesting and work from 9 am to 4 pm with the local farmers with a 2 hour break. Afterwards, the children have a chance to enjoy natural hot springs and local cuisine. Unfortunately, this year most of the farming trips were cancelled, therefore, the rice harvesting trips will be held online instead.
It is indeed unfortunate that the rice harvesting trips were cancelled due to the pandemic. As I had a chance to participate, I wanted to share the photos and my impressions with those who were not able to participate in the farming trips in Akita.
農家体験の流れは、朝９時には畑に入り、12時まで作業を行います。12時頃は、農家さんたちと一緒にご飯を食べてから、1時半頃まで昼寝です。そして、1時半から4時までお仕事をやり、4時にはお別れです。
4時頃、畑での作業が終わって、「疲れた」という気持ちが全然なかったです。しかし、翌日に起きたら、腕、足と背中が痛かったです。普段は、肉体労働をやらないので、あまり使っていない筋肉が痛くなりました。
For these 2 days that I was a farmer, I also worked from 9 am to about 12 pm. On a 2 hour break we had lunch and took a nap. After the break, we continued working until 4 pm. I did not feel tired at all when the work was over, yet, my muscles were sore the next morning.
That was my first time working as a farmer. Before this experience, I was not acquaintanced with the farmer’s life. However, the local farmers told me they start working at 5 am and go to sleep around 9 pm, this is pretty much what I imagined farmer’s life to be.
都会出身の私、以前、農業体験をやったことがなかったですが、実際の農家生活は私が想像していた農家生活の通りでした。農家のひばりさんがお話しされるには、朝5時に起き、午後４時まで作業をやり、午後9時に寝ます。
Fall is actually a very busy season for the farmers. The farming trips I went to, included not only the rice harvesting, but also chestnut harvesting, digging potatoes and feeding the cows.
秋の季節は、農家さんたちにとって忙しい時期なので、木曜、金曜は大仙市の佐々木さんに手伝いに行ってきました。わらび座の職員と一緒に行き、稲かけをやりながら、佐々木さんとお話をしました。農家生活についてお話をし、感動しました。
稲かけだけではなく、さつま芋掘りをしたり、栗を収穫をしたり、牛に餌をあげました。
Before I started my internship at Warabi-za, I thought that the company was related only to the arts and I certainly did not think I would have a chance to experience the farmer’s life.
わらび座とは、芸術だけであると思ったけど、わらび座の仕事の範囲はとっても広いです。インターンシップ中に、農家体験をするチャンスがあると思わなかったです。わらび座は、40年間以上、日本のいろいろな地域の中学生のために修学旅行を行います。今回は、中学生のように、修学旅行に参加することができ、一生忘れられない体験です。
農家さんたちによって、修学旅行に参加した子ども達は、秋田によく戻って来ます。高校生、大学生、社会人になっても、修学旅行に参加した子供達は、農場のお父さんとお母さんを忘れなく、畑のお母さんとお父さんと連絡とっています。このようなお話を聞き、感動しました。
私も農家体験に参加し、田舎に暮らすいろいろな体験を得ることができました。今年、修学旅行に参加することができなかった皆さんのために、オンライン修学旅行などを通じて自分の感動を共有したいです。
Warabi-za has been holding these farming trips for more than 40 years and it was a very memorable experience. As the farmers said, the children that have participated in such trips keep returning to Akita after many years. The middle schoolers that once came to Akita to a farming trip, keep in touch with the Akita farmers and come back to Akita even after entering high school, university or even after finding a full time job. I felt touched by these stories.

わらび座は新たな取り組みとして、9月から12月まで、国際教養大学（AIU）の学生2名のインターン生を受け入れています。これは、国際教養大学がコロナウイルス感染拡大防止のため2020年4月から1年間キャンパスや寮が閉鎖されオンライン授業を継続せざるを得ない中、学生の皆様の住居の確保や、社会との新たな出会いの場づくりとして実施されるものです。このブログでは、4か月という限られた期間ですが、インターン生から見た、わらび座・秋田の姿を、日々の仕事を通じて綴っていきたいと思います。

From September to December, Warabiza accepts two internship students from Akita International University. From April 2020, Akita International University closed the campus, and they provide all online courses in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Thus, we think we can help the students by offering accommodations and providing new connections for students and the local community in Akita. Although the period is limited, we will tell you the feelings and the perspectives of the two students for Warabiza and Akita.
